Visa Clampdown

Onslaught on Illegitimate Education VisasDue to a reported  number of misdemeanorsregarding education visas and foreign students, the Ministry of Education has cautioned alllanguage schools and education organisationsin Pattaya to adhere to the rules and confirmthat all foreign students registered with them, legitimately attend classes and take regularlanguage examination tests. The Ministry alsoorganised a meeting with investigators andsenior officials from Chonburi ImmigrationOffice in Jomtien to address the issue ofEducation Visas. For some time, manyforeigners have taken advantage of staying inThailand by obtaining an Education Visa inorder to learn the Thai language. However, some ‘students’, especially those whoare under the retirement age of 50 (so unable to apply for Retirement Visas) havedisregarded the rules and simply use theEducation Visa as a means to stay long termin Thailand without having to do constantborder runs. Apparently, several languageschools in Pattaya are flaunting the law andblatantly selling courses to foreigners, whohave no intention of attending the schoolsin question; thus allowing them to obtainan Education Visa. Recently, one Englishman went to renew hisEducation Visa at Immigration, and bychance the officer chatted to him in Thai.It turned out that the man couldn’t speakone word of Thai, and after furtherinvestigation, the visa he had for the past 6years wascancelled
